Sidney Charles Backhouse – Private 47363

In 1901 Sidney (b 1889) lived at the Farm House,West Garforth near the Goose Inn . Also there were his father John (b 1855), mother Mary (b 1858) and brother Andrew (b 1884).
He married Gertrude Peplow on 28th June 1913 in the Parish Church in Kippax. At this time his occupation was listed as a farmer.His father , John Backhouse, was deceased at the time of the marriage.
Sidney served in France and Flanders with 13th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
His enlistment date was 1st Dec 1915 at the age of 26y 8m at which time he is living in West Garforth and working in a colliery as a Banksman.
He was Killed in Action at the age of 29 on 29th Oct 1918, just 12 days before Armistice Day.
There is no known grave for Sidney but his name is listed on Panel 9 of the
Vis-en-Artois Memorial

The Vis-en-Artois Memorial bears the names of over 9000 men who fell in the period from 8 August 1918 to the date of the Armistice in the Advance to Victory in Picardy and Artois, between the Somme and Loos, and who have no known grave.
